Joshua B. Hill, PhD
Data Science, Security, and Crime
Welcome to my webpage! My name is Josh Hill, and I'm the Founding Director of the Institute for Advanced Analytics and Security (IAAS) - a permanent research and development organization - as well as Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Southern Mississippi. I recently concluded a $4.75 million contract from the Department of Defense examining technology transfer from defense applications to the Homeland Security sector and am currently working as Co-PI with the Ocean Enterprise Cooperative Institute (OECI) on Research and Applications of Coastal and Ocean Unmanned Systems Data Assembly - a project funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). My research has appeared in the Journal of Criminal Justice, the Journal of Defense Modeling and Simulation, the American Journal of Criminal Justice, Southern Geographer, and Criminal Justice Policy Review among others. Additionally, I've authored or co-authored several books including Introduction to Homeland Security: Policy, Administration, and Organization.
My research has largely focused on quantitative applications within security, particularly event modeling and prediction using Machine Learning (ML), as well as quantitative analysis of the politics of criminal justice. More recent research has branched out from criminal justice and criminology to examine a variety of topics ranging from bivalve ageing techniques to the development of new visual sensor data systems to solve the problem of massive data faced by uncrewed systems.
IAAS was founded in March 2020, an auspicious time to begin a new institute. Its three pillars are basic research, support for data science at USM, and the development of intellectual property.
Research Methods
My recent research has focused on the development of new research methodologies involving both spatial modeling and machine learning.
